Retrocomputing
I like old computers and old consoles, if you couldn’t tell from the content of The Industrious Rabbit.
Machines I own
Amiga 1200
This is a very souped up Amiga 1200. I got a refurbished machine from Retro Passion, and then started upgrading it further:
- It came with an ACA 1233, but I put in a PiStorm32 Lite with a Raspberry Pi 3A. It’s pretty great, except (as of November 2024) there are issues with using debuggers on it.
- I upgraded the internal CF card to 64 GB, which means I can hold literally all the Amiga software. I could probably also fit all of Aminet and TOSEC on the currently unused partitions on the PiStorm’s SD card, too.
- I replaced the old keyboard membrane with a hard PCB membrane. Typing is still weird, and I’d love to get a mechanical keyboard for the A1200 someday.
- I have a Plipbox for Internet connectivity. It’s not super fast, but that’s OK because I’m on an Amiga and the internet should be slow on there.
- I have a Aiptek pen tablet for drawing in DPaint and Brilliance.
- I use an Open Source Scan Converter for the Amiga’s custom chip output, and HDMI out from the PiStorm for RTG output, and I run them through an HDMI switch w/ PIP.
- I have a wireless Tank Mouse and a gamepad for mouse and joystick.
It’s a very fun machine to play with.
Amiga 600 case and keyboard
I got this a while back and think I want to throw a Raspberry Pi and Keyrah into it to build a high powered A600. Maybe I’ll get around to it.
Game Boy Advance SP
Eventually I will get to some Game Boy development. I also like having a small, portable gaming system. I have a flash cart that also has an NES emulator so I can play NES games along with GB, GBC, and GBA games. This one doesn’t have any crazy upgrades.
MiSTer FPGA
It’s not quite q “retro computer” but eh, it means I don’t have to have a ton of other machines around when I want to mess with, say, a C64.
Sun Ultra 5
We had an Ultra 5 as the webserver when I worked at Villa Julie and that’s what we hosted the Online Application on, along with other apps I wrote. I plan to turn this one into a server for Amiga stuff and maybe other low-power retro applications.
Sun Blade 100
This is a beefier machine with a 3D GPU. I’d like to use it to learn some C++ programming with OpenGL, and see how well Solaris GUIs work.
Other consoles
- SNES (needs recapping)
- Dreamcast
- PlayStation 2
- Wii (Homebrew Channel installed)
- WiiU
